Slug Pellet Ingredient Ban - The Facts & Alternatives

Friday 8th April 2022

Back in 2018 the UK Government announced a ban on Metaldehyde, the ingredient most commonly used in slug pellet products. From 1st April 2022 it is no longer legal to sell or use products containing this ingredient.

So what are the alternatives?

There has been some confusion over the ban, some being led to believe that all slug pellets are banned. However this is not the case and there are organic alternatives on the market that can still be sold.

Pellets made from Ferric Phosphate are just as effective but are less harmful to wildlife and are approved for use by organic growers.

Did you know that Doff stopped producing slug pellets containing the now banned ingredient 2 years ago? Their Slug Pellets contain Ferric Prosphate are legal to sell. This includes their 'Power Up' and 'Greenfingers' ranges.

You can view the press release regarding the ban of Metaldehyde from Farming Minister Victoria Prentis MP on the GOV.UK website.
