In 2022 Wilsons will celebrate 30 years in the business; a story from a home family business to experienced wholesaler in the DIY and hardware industry. Some things haven't changed, we still put the customers at the heart of everything that we do.
Friday 24th December 2021As we celebrate our 30 year anniversary next year, here is the Wilsons story so far... THE HISTORY OF OUR FAMILY BUSINESS!
1992 - Richard Hopkins purchased the business, operating from a garage at home & office block in North London. Turnover - £30k a year.
1994 - Son Ivan joined the business, visiting customers with samples in a large suitcase! Mum was calling customers from the kitchen table. Sister Abi started working on the accounts.
2000 - First ever colour catalogue was printed!
2000 - More space needed - a lock up garage was rented down the road and stock was transported back to the office to be despatched.
2000 - Son Gary and Aunt Suzanne joined the business.
2001 - A second lock up garage was rented next to the original one, and our product range doubled in size.
2001 - Acquisition of a local doormat importer – the Sentry brand is born!
2001 - Another move to much larger premises in Finchley - a big improvement, with new racking and lots more space.
2003 - The growing business relocated to Colchester into a 5,000 sq ft unit.
2004 - The first non family member of staff was employed, Brian Turney! Who is still employed today.
2004 - The very first container of doormats arrived - exciting!
2005 - A premises move again - to No.7 Grange Way, a 10,000 sq ft unit.
2006 - More warehouse staff needed to help with orders.
2007 - The first computer was installed in the business!
2008 - The business continued to grow and remote warehousing was used to store extra stock.
2011 - CJ Jenkins was acquired, another established imported of plungers and various lines. A 2nd acquisition that year – Wm Granger of Leicester.
2015 - Moray Firth Distributors, a wholesaler in Scotland was acquired.
2015 - The first trade show stand at Ricoh, followed by Glee. Spring Fair the following year.
2017 - Another move to Emerald House, 20,000 sq ft and potential to grow!
2018 - Another acquisition! This time it is Westbrook & Thompson in South London – 1000 new lines all moved to the Colchester warehouse involving new racking and more!
2020 - Covid lines were in demand, with email marketing and updates to customers almost daily. A year of growth.
2021 - External consultants complete a business review. Additional resource was recruited and Directors Gary, Angus and Ivan changed roles. A challenging year with supply chain issues and price increases affecting all corners of the globe.
2022- Wilsons celebrate 30 years of business!
