Try these top 20 Tips to get rid of spiders in your home!

Wednesday 16th August 2023

As we approach the rainy and wet season, naturally spiders begin to enter homes, and if you don’t like them, like most people, then see our useful guide below to try and keep them away! Keep in mind that spiders can be beneficial as they help control other insect populations, but if you're looking to reduce their presence, here are some tips:

1.    Keep Your Home Clean:
Regularly clean and vacuum your home to remove dust, debris, and spider webs. Clutter can provide hiding spots for spiders and their prey.

2.    Seal Cracks and Gaps:
Seal any cracks, gaps, and openings around doors, windows, and other entry points to prevent spiders from getting inside. Use weather stripping and caulk to close off these gaps.

3.    Eliminate Food Sources:
Spiders feed on insects, so reducing other insect populations can discourage spiders. Keep your home clean of crumbs, food spills, and open rubbish bins!

4.    Use Essential Oils:
Some essential oils like peppermint, eucalyptus, and tea tree oil have strong scents that spiders dislike. You can mix a few drops of these oils with water and spray around entry points and areas where spiders are often seen.

5.    Natural Repellents:
Natural spider repellents like white vinegar can be used around entry points, windows, and corners where spiders are likely to enter.

6.    Cedar:
Cedar wood, in the form of blocks or chips, can emit a scent that repels spiders. Place these in closets, corners, and other spider-prone areas.

7.    Remove Outdoor Clutter:
Trim bushes and plants that are close to your home, as these can provide pathways for spiders to get indoors!

8.    Turn Off Outdoor Lights:
Lights near doors and windows can attract insects, which in turn attract spiders. Consider using outdoor lights with less appealing colours or switching them off when not needed.

9.    Regularly Check and Clean Storage Areas:
Lofts, garages and other storage areas can be breeding grounds for spiders. Regularly clean and organise these spaces to reduce their hiding spots.

10. Use Spider Catchers:
Rather than killing spiders, use humane spider catchers to gently capture and release them outdoors. Or sticky traps!

11. Professional Pest Control:
If the spider infestation is severe or persistent, consider hiring a professional pest control service to assess the situation and provide appropriate solutions.

12. Screens and Mesh:
Install screens on windows and doors to prevent spiders from entering. Make sure the screens are in good condition without any tears or gaps.

13. Citrus Peels:
Place citrus peels (orange, lemon, or lime) in areas where spiders are likely to hide. The strong scent can repel them.

14. Mint Plants:
Plant mint around the perimeter of your home, as spiders tend to dislike the strong scent.

15. Lavender Sachets:
Use dried lavender in sachets placed in closets, drawers, and corners to keep spiders away.

16. Chestnuts:
Place chestnuts at entry points, as some believe the chemical compounds in chestnuts can act as a natural spider repellent.

17. Cinnamon:
Sprinkle cinnamon around windowsills, doors, and other entry points to deter spiders.

18. Eucalyptus Garland:
Create a garland of eucalyptus leaves and hang it in areas where spiders are problematic.

19. Bay Leaves:
Place Bay leaves in cupboards, corners, and shelves, as their strong scent can deter spiders.

20. Pet Hair:
If you have pets, let their fur accumulate in certain areas where spiders might enter, as spiders dislike the texture.

Remember that while these methods can help deter spiders, it's nearly impossible to completely eliminate them!

Some level of spider presence is normal and can even be beneficial for keeping other pest populations in check.
